The Kingstown Government School, formerly called the Montrose Government School opened its doors on the 10th September, 1962. The school started with thirty-one (31) pupils: twenty (20) boys and eleven (11) girls. By the end of the first week, Friday 14th September, 1962, there were one hundred and thirty-one (131) pupils on roll. The staff comprised fourteen (14) teachers. The first headteacher was Mr. Durrant Liverpool, originally from Georgetown, St. Vincent.

Today, the school's population has increased drastically to 510 students and 29 teachers.
