Activities

Co-curricular and extra activities

The Kingstown Government School has a three year Development Plan (2011-2014), from which it operates. We try to follow this plan as closely as possible in order to accomplish our objectives and goals. Several staff meetings and PTA meetings were convened during the academic year.

The areas of Numeracy and Literacy continue to be on the front burner of the school's calendar. We continue to monitor and evaluate students' progress, especially in reading. Our Miscue analysis and Running records are ongoing.

The school has also established two organisations in the forms of Cub Scouts and a Brownie Pack. In an effort to obtain much needed funds and to bring the school's community together, several fund-raising activities are held including an annual School Fair, World Food Day activities, an Independence  Princess Pageant, a Barbeque and a Talent Show.

School Feeding Programme

There has been a tremendous increase in the number of students benefitting from the School Feeding Programme. Approximately, 300 students are at present benefitting from this programme.

Annual Reading Extravaganza

This is an annual event in which all students of different classes participate. Several activities are usually conducted including visits to elderly persons in the communities to read stories and visits to media houses. A school's magazine was also launched in 2010, which would be upgraded on an annual basis. Several in-house competitions are also held including Reading, Spelling and Public Speaking.

KGS Annual Fair

The annual fair is one of the school's major fund-raising activities held during the first term in December. Letters are distributed to parents and business houses in the community requesting their assistance by way of items and monetary contributions. There are different stalls and lots of activities for the children such as dips, punch boards, bouncing castle and face painting.

Independence Princess Pageant

This is an annual Independence event in which female students of Grade 4 and 5 participate. They are judged in several categories and presented with gifts. This competiton is geared towards building students' self-esteem and confidence, also exposure to public speaking.

Talent Show

The talent show is another annual event which takes place around April. Students from the different classes showcase various talents. The best is selected to represent the school externally.

Sports

School Sports is held around February during the second term and the students, parents and teachers look forward to this occasion. The Road relay is usually very exciting. The Kindergarten sports is held seperately on the school grounds and the upper classes at the Victoria Park. Houses are judged for march past, best dress and overall competitive winner.

World Food Day Activities

This again is an annual event in which parents contribute fruits and goodies to the school. These are displayed in the upper building  and each class is expected to view exhibits. Donations are made to charitable organisations and the elderly in Stoney Grounds and surrounding communities.

Graduation

Graduation is an annual grand occasion for the KGS and is usually conducted at the end of the school year. There is a prize giving and award ceremony usually held in one of the churches in the community. The principal presents the annual school report to all stakeholders. Teachers, students and parents are rewarded for their accomplishments.

Supportive Organisations

The KGS is always grateful for any assistance granted to it. On numerous occasions, organisations have come to its assistance. Some of these organisations include:

The Seedlings from Canada, Booker Hill Primary School in the UK, Hands Across the Sea from the USA and recently, host of the television show "Children on the Move", Aunty Felicia and Uncle Chris, who will be hosting a fund-raising activity at the school in aid of an in-house library.
